Hennepin Healthcare nurse nominated for Breast Cancer SUPERHERO Portrait Project

One of our own employees – a breast cancer patient and survivor – was selected to have her portrait painted as part of the Breast Cancer Superhero Portrait Project.
In 2022, Margaret Udo, RN, discovered a lump in her breast, but she had just recently gone through a job transition, accepting a job at HCMC in Oncology. Her cancer turned out to be the worst kind of aggressive breast cancer you can have – triple-negative Stage 2. She found out two days before Christmas and had to wait to talk to the doctor for more details until after the holiday. She’s been through so much – not having insurance coverage due to a change in jobs, a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy. Through it all she’s been so brave and has been supported by her family, friends, church, and community.
Margaret was nominated by a nurse and a patient at Hennepin Healthcare’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. She came to the United States from Nigeria several years ago and worked her way through school to become an RN before being diagnosed with cancer. Faith, family and determination are her superpowers. Her portrait was painted as a superhero from Black Panther – King T’Challa’s sister, Shuri – by guest artist Geno Okok, a muralist/portrait painter who is also from Nigeria.
Donations to Hennepin Healthcare’s Inspire Arts program allowed this unique portrait commission to be part of the Breast Cancer Superhero Portrait Project.
