Digestive problems are common with bisphosphonate pills but can be addressed if patients take the pills with water and on empty stomachs. “They are safe. We know that people are going to feel a difference in terms of their exertion and breathing,” Subrahmanian said. “Young athletes are going to have to communicate with their coaches and say, Hey, I might need a little bit more of a breather here and there.”
