Here for MN

As a Level One Trauma Center, Hennepin Healthcare isn’t just in downtown Minneapolis. Our care extends to your neighbors, your town, and your state of Minnesota. We’re here for Minnesota, here for life. Congress has approved changes to Medicaid that will make it harder for our patients to access that care.

This is not the outcome we hoped for because it presents more challenges for many patients and families, not just in Minnesota but our entire country. About half of our patients rely on Medicaid, and for some areas it is even higher.

Early estimates calculate that as many as  250,000 Minnesotans  may lose Medicaid coverage. If people lose access to Medicaid, they may choose to delay their care, resulting in worse health outcomes, until health issues reach a crisis.

Medicaid doesn’t just help Medicaid patients — it supports the entire health care system, including those with private insurance. Here are some examples of the life-saving care and programs that Hennepin Healthcare provides the entire state of Minnesota:

  • Trauma and burn care for all Minnesotans: Four of ten trauma and burn patients are from outside Hennepin County. Sixty-two percent of patients who come to the Emergency Department use Medicaid.
  • Statewide mental health care: Hennepin Healthcare operates the largest inpatient psychiatric intensive care unit in Minnesota. Fifty-one percent of patients accessing inpatient mental health use Medicaid.
  • Physician training: 60% of doctors in Minnesota trained at Hennepin Healthcare.
  • Addiction treatment: Medicaid pays for 73% of the care for patients accessing addiction treatment.
  • Hyperbaric care: Hennepin Healthcare includes the only 24/7 hyperbaric care center in the region.
  • Poison control: The Minnesota Regional Poison Center, housed at Hennepin Healthcare, fielded over 43,000 calls last year statewide.

We will continue to assess the impact, plan for the future, and closely monitor next steps from lawmakers. Our dedication to our mission remains unchanged, and we will be here for all who need us.
