Burn Center and Acute Burn Clinic

The nationally recognized Burn Center and the Acute Burn Clinic provide intensive, acute, and rehabilitative burn care to children and adults from the Twin Cities and surrounding states.

About the Burn Center

Comprised of a 17-bed inpatient unit and the Acute Burn and Wound Clinic, the Burn Center occupies a 16,000-square-foot space on our downtown Minneapolis campus. Our highly trained, a multidisciplinary team works closely with patients and families in a supportive, state-of-the-art environment to meet their unique needs and achieve the highest level of functioning.

Treating an average of 12 inpatients per day and 20+ patients per day in the clinic, Hennepin Healthcare's Burn Center is one of the busiest centers in the nation – and also one of the finest. It is verified by the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons. The Burn and Reconstructive Surgery division specializes in reconstruction of the head and neck, post-mastectomy breast reconstruction, breast reduction, and soft-tissue defects.

  • Burn injury

  • Epidermal loss from various medical conditions
  • Frostbite

  • Inhalation injury
  • Plastic reconstruction
  • Surgical procedures

Burn rehabilitation begins during the acute treatment phase and may last days to months to years, depending on the extent of the burn. Each program is different. The goals of a burn rehabilitation program include helping the patient return to the highest level of function and independence possible, while improving the overall quality of life–physically, emotionally, and socially.

Inpatient (hospital) care

Patients and their families visiting the Burn Center have access to the latest treatments as well as a caring supportive staff that put patients and their family’s needs first. We understand the impact that a traumatic burn injury can have and provide the resources and emotional support necessary to begin our patients and their families on the road to recovery.

  • Access to a wide range of multi-disciplinary specialties, including:
    • Adult and pediatric intensivists
    • Burn ICU nurses
    • General and plastic surgeons
    • Rehabilitation medicine physicians, like occupational and physical therapists
    • Supportive specialists
    • Trauma psychology, and others.
  • Dietary and nutrition support focused on promoting healing and recovery
  • A Hyperbaric Medicine unit - the only chamber in the state - available for 24/7 hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
  • Support and coordination of care including access to counselors, chaplain and social services.

Outpatient (clinic) care

The Acute Burn and Wound Clinic is a specialty clinic that provides comprehensive treatment and management of the patient with a variety of wounds. These wounds include burns, surgical wounds, ulcers and traumatic wounds. Nursing staff provides inpatient nursing consultations on wound management and phone triage. The clinic also provides services to patients needing antibiotic therapy. Clinic visits range from daily to weekly. Referrals can be made 24/7.

Physical and Occupational Therapy

The Burn Therapy Satellite Clinic located in the Purple Building on Level 5, provides care for patients after discharge and for those who did not need inpatient care. Specially trained burn therapists address range of motion, scar and pain management, and help make daily activities easier.

Support Services

Emotional support is an important part of your treatment. Join us for a discussion group to help you and your loved ones through burn treatment and recovery. Community resources are also available for one-on-one conversations and encouragement. Burn survivors, family, and friends are all welcome.
