A brightly lit hospital hallway leads to the entrance of a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Several healthcare staff are working at a curved central nurse’s station. A large blue wall on the right displays the words: "Pediatric Intensive Care Unit – Little Lives. Big Futures. Extraordinary Care." A patterned bench sits nearby for visitors.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

We provide expert care to infants, children, and adolescents who are critically ill or injured.

Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 9-bed state-of-the-art facility. Our multi-disciplinary team provides expert care to infants, children, and adolescents who are critically ill or injured and their families. Our expert care team includes:

  • Chaplains
  • Child life specialists
  • Dieticians
  • Nurses
  • Physicians
  • Pharmacists

We also have dedicated pediatric speech, physical, and occupational therapists on staff, and we provide trauma psychology services when needed.

As Minnesota’s original Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, we offer expert care with outcomes among the best in the nation. These outstanding outcomes are determined by VPS, the national entity responsible for managing and analyzing PICU outcomes. Our pediatric brain injury patients benefit from our unique, comprehensive Pediatric Brain Injury Program.

We make every attempt to provide stability and calm in what can be a difficult time. Our thoughtfully designed private patient rooms include a sleeping surface for caregivers. We can provide a limited number of separate family sleeping rooms for out-of-town families or those needing a place to gather and support their loved one.
