Thanks to improved awareness about safety, injuries from fireworks are down from past years. But for those who do experience an injury -- they can be devastating, traumatic, and will quickly ruin a holiday celebration.

"Serious injuries to hands from holding fireworks or the abdomen and legs from bracing fireworks are commonly seen at HCMC and are life-changing," explains Hennepin Healthcare's Trauma Prevention Coordinator Kaytlin Hanson, CCC-SLP.

Fireworks Safety Tips

To ensure a safe fireworks experience:

  • Supervision: Only adults should handle fireworks. Children should be closely supervised.
  • Lighting: Light fireworks on a flat, firm surface, away from grass and flammable materials.
  • Handling Duds: Never attempt to relight a malfunctioning firework. Wait 20 minutes, then soak it in water before disposal.
  • Storage: Keep fireworks in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources.
  • Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol when handling fireworks.
  • Pets: Keep pets indoors to prevent distress from loud noises.

What Fireworks Are Legal in Minnesota?

Minnesota law permits the use of certain non-explosive and non-aerial consumer fireworks. Legal options include:

  • Sparklers
  • Fountains
  • Ground spinners
  • Snappers

These fireworks are designed to stay on the ground and do not pose significant risks when used correctly. However, items that shoot into the air or explode, such as firecrackers, bottle rockets, and Roman candles are illegal in Minnesota. Possession or use of illegal fireworks can result in fines up to $1,000 and potential jail time.

Local Regulations in Minneapolis

In Minneapolis, the use of fireworks is restricted to nonexplosive types like sparklers and cones. They must be used on private property, not on public areas such as roads, alleys, schools, or parks. Fireworks are prohibited between 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., except on July 4th, when the prohibited hours are from 11:59 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. on July 5th.

Penalties for Illegal Fireworks

Possessing or using illegal fireworks in Minnesota can lead to:

  • Fines: Up to $1,000.
  • Confiscation: Law enforcement may seize illegal fireworks.
  • Criminal Charges: In cases resulting in injury or property damage, individuals may face criminal charges.
  • Civil Liability: Responsibility for damage caused by illegal fireworks use.

Attend Professional Displays

For a grander experience, consider attending professional fireworks shows. In Minneapolis, the "Red, White and Boom!" celebration features a 16-minute display launched between Boom Island and the Stone Arch Bridge. Activities begin at 6 p.m., with fireworks around 10 p.m. Check your city for other professional firework shows.

Enjoy, and be safe!
