What is Project SEARCH?

Project SEARCH is an internationally recognized program that aims to secure competitive employment for students with disabilities. It prepares young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for success in competitive, integrated employment. A business-focused transition program supports interns through workplace readiness upon graduation.

How does Project SEARCH work?

The students are immersed in the workplace for a full academic year, following a unique employability curriculum. They learn relevant skills transferable to in-demand community employment. They also work on individualized skill-building and employment planning. During the program, student interns aged 18-21 participate in three unpaid 10-week rotations across various areas of the hospital. These rotations provide them with job skills and practical learning experiences to help them secure competitive employment upon graduation.

Hennepin Healthcare has hosted Project SEARCH for 10 years, meet this year's first intern:

Kevion

With a big smile on his face and pep in his step, Kevion is always ready and excited to start his day. In the Cancer Center, Kevion is thorough in reviewing his checklist to ensure that he covers all the necessary items for disinfecting the waiting room, beverage station, and other areas in preparation for patients.

In his spare time, Kevion enjoys watching movies and TV shows with his sisters. One of his favorites is cooking shows. He enjoys cooking and baking and looks forward to spending time in his own kitchen one day. Through his enjoyment of cooking, he looks forward to the opportunity to work in the kitchen in an upcoming rotation.
