Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan spent time with and spoke to the youth who attended the American Indian Youth with Stethoscopes event hosted by the Hennepin Healthcare Talent Garden this past weekend. She spoke about the importance of health and education equity and the need for American Indian youth in healthcare as providers.
Over 60 American Indian youth between the ages of 12-18 to spend the day learning about healthcare professions, trying hands-on activities with real medical equipment, and hearing from professionals in the healthcare industry. The youth spent the day visiting our Simulation Center, hearing from a panel of experts, and learning how to use a stethoscope, a pulse oximeter, and other hands-on demonstrations.
They ended a day full of learning and activities by hearing from the Lieutenant Governor at a closing ceremony with traditional dancers and drums. American Indian Youth with Stethoscopes is part of the Hennepin Healthcare Talent Garden, a series of initiatives designed to connect historically excluded youth and young adults to healthcare jobs. A third of registrants were from out of town, with youth from the Bemidji area, White Earth, Red Lake, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. About 30 tribal affiliations were among the registered youth.
