Clinical expertise

Dr. Heegaard graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School and School of Public Health in Minneapolis, MN.  He did his Emergency Medicine Residency at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Dr. Heegaard has researched head injury and prehospital care, including helicopter EMS, ultrasound, sedation, and leadership. He has taught emergency medicine fellows, residents, medical students, and practicing emergency physicians. He is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Dr. Heegaard has served in several leadership and executive roles throughout his career. He served as Chief Clinical Officer and Chief Medical Officer at Hennepin Health System until 2019. He obtained his MBA from the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University in 2017. In April 2020, he became the President of West Essentia and later served as President of East Essentia. He has practiced the full spectrum of Emergency Medicine throughout his career. In October 2024, Dr. Heegaard rejoined Hennepin Health System's Department of Emergency Medicine and is entering his 30th as a faculty.
