National Poison Prevention Week 2025: When your "unexpected" happens, we’re here for you

by Hennepin Healthcare

In recognition of National Poison Prevention Week (March 16-22, 2025), the Minnesota Regional Poison Center reminds Minnesotans that poisoning can happen to anybody, at any age, anytime and anywhere. When your "unexpected" happens, call 1-800-222-1222. Our poison experts are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide free and confidential assistance for you and your loved ones. "We're proud to be on that other end of the phone, always available to serve Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota for poisoning questions or emergencies," says Dr. Jon Cole, Medical Director of Minnesota Regional Poison Center. "Whether it's about an exposure to medications, plants, mushrooms, household products, chemicals, pesticides, or any other poison questions, we're always here to for you – both confidentially and free of charge." To mark National Poison Prevention Week, several Minneapolis landmarks including the 35W Bridge, Lowry Bridge, and Capella Tower will be illuminated in red on the evening of March 16 to raise awareness of poison prevention. Throughout the month of March, watch for important public health messages from the Poison Center on our social media platforms (@mnpoisoncenter) covering a wide variety of topics. Did you know:

  • 92% of poison-related calls are safely managed at home with the guidance of poison experts, preventing unnecessary hospital visits.
  • Medical professionals rely on the Poison Center for the most up-to-date toxicology expertise and treatment recommendations.
  • Whether your child eats an edible, your elderly relative takes the wrong medication, or you breathe in harmful fumes, the Poison Center is just a phone call away to provide guidance for you and your family.
